Torbay Inter Faith Forum 4 Youth

Torbay Inter Faith Forum 4 Youth brings together young people of all faiths from Torbay Schools to meet and discuss relevant faith issues. The programme so far has considered such important subjects as 'Building Community' (a residential weekend at Buckfast Abbey) and 'God or No God' a late January afternoon event where this important question was discussed.

Torbay Inter Faith Forum 4 Youth activities support the Torbay Agreed Syllabus for RE contributing to the delivery of inter-faith dialogue - it also promoted Citizenship. The Forum has the approval of the Torbay Standing Advisory Committee for Religious Education, the Devon Adviser for RE and Torbay’s Change-Up Consortium and Youth Service. Torbay Inter-Faith Forum 4 Youth is affiliated to ‘Young Devon’.

Residential Weekend at

Grangehurst House, Buckfast Abbey

This was the first major event of the newly founded Torbay Inter Faith Forum 4 Youth and gave 40 pupils from Torbay secondary schools the opportunity to participate free of charge in this worthwhile initiative.

The varied inter-active programme contributed towards the pupils’ educational, spiritual, social and personal development in the context of promoting inter-faith dialogue. The focus was on extending knowledge and understanding of faiths as well as exploring contemporary social and faith issues with young people who may or may not have a personal faith commitment. The adults supervising the weekend included two former RE teachers (both CRB checked) and a present local Head of RE, as well as the Abbey Education Department staff.

This was an educational venture and not confessional in its approach. It supported the new Torbay Agreed Syllabus for RE contributing to the delivery of inter-faith dialogue which the syllabus now emphasises. It also promoted Citizenship. The Forum had the approval of the Torbay Standing Advisory Committee for Religious Education, the Devon Adviser for RE and Torbay’s Change-Up Consortium and Youth Service. Torbay Youth Inter-Faith Forum is affiliated to ‘Young Devon’.

  • An authority figure keeping a close, stern watch on us? A benevolent grand-dad?
  • An indulgent parent at our beck and call? Is there a God at all?
