Torbay
– Hameln Churches
In May of 2000 members of our congregation together with friends from other local churches
visited members of the
Evangelical Lutheran Münster-Gemeinde, Hameln, Germany. Click to read more about the town of Hameln. Click to hear the sound of the 'Pied Piper'! Click to listen to the tolling of the Münster bells Click to listen to Alexander Kuhlo on the Münster Organ play "Fantasie in F minor, K.608" (Allegro Maestoso) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart -ooOOOoo- The following article, written by Pastor Bernd Wrede the Superintendent Pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hameln was published in the Summer 2000 edition of 'Münster-Bote' ('Minster-Messenger') the quarterly magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Münster-Gemeinde, Hameln.Christians from Torbay as guests with us!In a brand-new bus, driven by Arthur and David, two particularly nice drivers, 52 guests from Torbay arrived in Hameln on the 27 May 2000. At the bus-parking place behind the Pied Piper Hall the 27 host families stood expectantly as the bus rolled up. For many of our guests, there was a happy reunion, for others it was the first time in Hameln. There were also several teenagers in the party, for them from the first evening there was a special youth programme. The Evangelical Lutheran youth toasted the English teenagers with a fruity 'welcome cocktail'. The guests represented the Methodist, Baptist, Anglican and Roman Catholic communities of Torbay. The following days were filled with a diverse program: the guests were very much impressed with the border area museum near Duderstadt, where the guide explained in a very informative and stirring way the German division, the years of the separation, and the willpower to get back together. For the first time in the 20-year-old story of the partnership meetings, there was a visit to the British Garrison in Hameln, at the Linsingen barracks. For guests and hosts there was a welcome by the Commanding Officer and an explanation of the tasks undertaken by the British soldiers, displays of the soldiers equipment was viewed and the group were told of the importance of the British Army presence in Hameln. Also in the programme was a reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Hameln, a tour through the old town led by the Pied Piper and his assistant, a canoeing expedition on the Weser for the young people, a two-hour boat-trip from Bodenwerder to Hameln for the older folk. A very stimulating fellowship evening in the Münster with many different performances by both hosts and guests. Some of the group also visited EXPO in Hanover. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the host families especially those that did not come from the Münster community! We now begin to make plans to visit Torbay in 2002. Bernd Wrede |
