18.15 - Palace Avenue Music Group and guest musicians from Hameln

18.30 – Welcome – Revd Paul Saunders (President of Christians Together in Paignton)

On behalf of Christians Together in Paignton it is my privilege to welcome you all to this service celebrating the special relationship between the people of Torbay and Hameln, and particularly between our churches. We welcome all of our guests from Hameln, especially Pastor Udo Wolten who will be sharing God’s word with us later in the service.

Response by Prisca Frey on behalf of the Hameln visitors

Introductory verses

God has shown His love to us by sending His only Son into the world.
God did this so we might have life through Christ.
This is love!
It is not that we loved God but that He loved us.
For God sent His Son to pay for our sins with His own blood.
Dear friends, if God loved us that much, then we should love each other.

Hymn – LOBE DEN HERREN  - PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY

Lob ihn in Ewigkeit.

1.   Praise to the Lord, the almighty, the King of creation;
O my soul, praise him, for his is thy health and salvation:
All ye who hear,
Brothers and sisters draw near,
Praise him in glad adoration.

2.  Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work, and defend thee;
Surely his goodness and mercy here    daily attend thee;
Ponder anew
What the almighty can do,
Who with his love doth befriend thee.

3.  Praise to the Lord, who doth nourish thy life and restore thee,
Fitting thee well for the tasks that are ever before thee,
Then to thy need
He like a mother doth speed,
Spreading the wings of grace o'er thee.

4.  Praise to the Lord, who, when darkness of sin is abounding,
Who, when the godless do triumph. All virtue confounding,
Sheddeth his light,
Chaseth the horrors of night,
Saints with his mercy surrounding.

5.  Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath come now with praises before him!
Let the Amen
Sound from his people again:
Gladly for aye we adore him.

Joachim Neander (1650-1680) translated by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) and Rupert E Davies (1909- ) v.3

Prayers and responses followed by the Lord’s Prayer

Leader: You came into this world to bring true peace - a
right relationship between all people and God, between
individuals and between nations

All: Lord, you are the Prince of Peace.
You are the light of the world.

Leader: In you alone can we find peace and in the doing of
your will is our peace.  Grant us your peace in our
hearts and may this peace go out from us to touch
others. May we be true peacemakers.

All: Lord, you are the Prince of Peace.
You are the light of the world.

Leader: Give us the strength to renounce our material
comforts and securities.  May there be a fair
distribution and use of all resources.  May there be
justice and freedom from discrimination for all peoples.

All: Lord, you are the Prince of Peace.
You are the light of the world.

The Lord’s Prayer

Hymn –
NUN DANKET ALLE GOTT  - NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD

1.    Now thank we all our God,
       with hearts and hands and voices,
       who wondrous things has done,
       in whom his world rejoices;
       who from our mothers' arms
       has blessed us on our way
       with countless gifts of love,
       and still is ours today.

2.    O may this bounteous God
       through all our life be near us,
       with ever joyful hearts
       and blessèd peace to cheer us;
       and keep us in his grace,
       and guide us when perplexed,
       and free us from all ills
       in this world and the next.

3.    All praise and thanks to God
       the Father now be given,
       the Son, and him who reigns
       with them in highest heaven,
       the one eternal God,
       whom earth and heaven adore,
       for thus it was, is now,
       and shall be evermore.

Nun danket alle Gott Martin Rinkart (1586-1649) translated by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878)

DOWN THE MOUNTAIN THE RIVER FLOWS

1          Down the mountain the river flows,
            And it brings refreshing wherever it goes.
            Through the valleys and over the fields,
            The river is rushing and the river is here.

            The river of God sets our feet a-dancing,
            The river of God fills our hearts with cheer;
            The river of God fills our mouths with laugher,
            And we rejoice for the river is here.

2          The river of God is teeming with life,
            And all who touch it can be revived.
            And those who linger on this river's shore
            Will come back thirsting for more of the Lord.

The river of God sets our feet a-dancing,
            The river of God fills our hearts with cheer;
            The river of God fills our mouths with laugher,
            And we rejoice for the river is here.

3          Up to the mountain we love to go
            To find the presence of the Lord.
            Along the banks of the river we run,
            We dance with laughter, giving praise to the Son.

            The river of God sets our feet a-dancing,
            The river of God fills our hearts with cheer;
            The river of God fills our mouths with laugher,
            And we rejoice for the river is here.

HE HAS RISEN

He has risen,
            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            Jesus is alive.

1          When the life flowed from His body,
            Seemed like Jesus' mission failed.
            But His sacrifice accomplished,
            Victory over sin and hell.

            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            Jesus is alive.

2          In the grave God did not leave Him,
            For His body to decay;
            Raised to life, the great awakening,
            Satan's power He overcame.

            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            Jesus is alive.

3          If there were no resurrection,
            We ourselves could not be raised;
            But the Son of God is living,
            So our hope is not in vain.

He has risen,
            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            Jesus is alive.

4          When the Lord rides out of heaven,
            Mighty angels at His side,
            They will sound the final trumpet,
            From the grave we shall arise.

            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            Jesus is alive.

5          He has given life immortal,
            We shall see Him face to face;
            Through eternity we'll praise Him,
            Christ, the Champion of our faith.

            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            He has risen,
            Jesus is alive.

MAY OUR HOMES BE FILLED WITH DANCING

1          May our homes be filled with dancing,
            may our streets be filled with joy;
            may injustice bow to Jesus
            as the people turn and pray.

2          From the mountain to the valley,
            hear our praises rise to you.
            From the heavens to the nations,
            hear our singing fill the air.

3          May our light shine in the darkness,
            as we walk before the cross;
            may your glory fill the whole earth
            as the water o'er the seas.

4          From the mountain to the valley,
            hear our praises rise to you.
            From the heavens to the nations,
            hear our singing fill the air.

Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
            Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
            Hallelujah, Hallelujah,

5          From the mountain to the valley,
            hear our praises rise to you.
            From the heavens to the nations,
            hear our singing fill the air.

Address by Pastor Udo Wolten

Address by Pastor Udo Wolten – Minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Münster, Hameln – “God’s overwhelming but not crushing love

Hymn – DER TAG, MEIN GOTT, IST NUN VERGANGEN - THE DAY THOU GAVEST LORD HAD ENDED

1.    The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended,
The darkness falls at thy behest;
To thee our morning hymns ascended,
Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

2.    We thank thee that thy church unsleeping,
While earth rolls onward into light,
Through all the world her watch is keeping,
And rests not now by day or night.

3.    As o'er each continent and island
The dawn leads on another day,
The voice of prayer is never silent,
Nor dies the strain of praise away.

4.    The sun that bids us rest is waking
Our brethren 'neath the western sky,
And hour by hour fresh lips are making
Thy wondrous doings heard on high.

5.    So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never,
Like earth's proud empires, pass away;
Thy kingdom stands, and grows for ever,
Till all thy creatures own thy sway.

John Ellerton (1826-1893)
